The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in another state.
The next step, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create a greater amount of competition the energy market was divided into two levels
- Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
The South East Queensland market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This enabled consumers to switch to the provider who had the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in Queensland is supplied by two distributors
- Energex
The Energex network distributes electricity to premises in an area covering around 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, stretching from the border of NSW in the south to Gympie in the north. This covers Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay. - Ergon Energy
The Ergon Energy network distributes electricity to Queensland including coastal and rural areas and also remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.
Lower your power bills with these electricity -saving tips
Here are some easily implemented tips to reduce how much you spend on electricity
- Minimise draughts. Prevent cold air or hot air getting in or out via gaps under doors and around windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Turn off all appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Minimise usage of the clothes dryer. Dry the clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Instead of turning on the heater, wear clothing that's appropriate for cold weather (jumper, warm socks, booties, beanie).
- Minimise air conditioning use by opening windows at night to allow the cool air in, then shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
- Close doors of rooms that you don't use, so that you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
- Reduce the use of lights. Rely on natural light if possible.
- Prevent the sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms where the sun shines in.
